Chapter 7
Mrs. Allerton and Poirot try to identify everyone in the dining room based on the guest list. Jackie and the Otterbournes are together. Dr. Bessner and Fanthorp are at another table. Simon, Linnet and Andrew Pennington dine together. Miss Bowers, Ferguson, Richetti, Miss Robson and Miss Van Schuyler occupy another table. After dinner Poirot meets Jackie on the deck, he is sorry that she chose this journey. Before Poirot falls to sleep, he hears Simon say, “we’ve got to go through with it now.” Chapter 8 Cornelia Robson, happy and positive about the trip, walks with Poirot. Rosalie walks ahead of them on the guided temple tour. When the group returns to the Karnak, Pennington asks Linnet to sign documents. They meet in the observation saloon joined by Ferguson, Poirot, Miss Van Schuyler, Simon and Fanthrop. Linnet reads the documents before signing, Fanthorp compliments her business sense. Chapter 9 The boat stops and the passengers visit another temple. Simon tells Poirot he is glad Jackie is on the boat and there is no more running from her. Poirot asks Pennington about the coincidence of meeting Linnet and Simon on their honeymoon. Simon saves Linnet from a boulder that crashes in the spot she was sitting. As Simon and Linnet board the boat, they meet Jackie. Simon assumed Jackie had caused the boulder to fall but now thinks it must have been an accident. Chapter 10 The guests arrive at the Second Cataract Hotel. Poirot meets Colonel Race, a colleague, who believes there is a murderer on the Karnak. Poirot talks vaguely about the Simon-Linnet-Jackie situation. Poirot hopes they arrive at their destination without incident. Chapter 11 Poirot meets Jackie on the way to his cabin for the night. Jackie seems tense then relaxed. Poirot notes the look in Jackie’s eyes before he retires. Cornelia, Jackie, Simon, Linnet and Fanthorp are in the observation saloon. Linnet goes to bed. Jackie has several drinks while talking to Cornelia. It’s after midnight when Fanthorp leaves the saloon. Jackie declares that Simon is hers then shoots him in the leg. Cornelia runs to get Fanthorp. Miss Bowers is summoned to take care of hysterical Jackie. Fanthorp brings Dr. Bessner to Simon. Simon has a fractured bone and can’t walk. They take him to Dr. Bessner’s cabin for a surgical procedure. Fanthorp goes to look for Jackie’s pistol but can’t find it. Chapter 12 The next morning Colonel Race tells Poirot that Linnet was found dead from a gunshot to the head. Dr. Bessner examines the body. Poirot notices a “J” on the wall and Linnet’s stained finger. Dr. Bessner says Linnet died instantly, he estimates the time of death between 12:00 am and 2:00 am. Dr. Bessner tells Colonel Race and Poirot about the incident between Jackie and Simon. In the smoking room, Colonel Race questions Dr. Bessner, Fanthorp, Cornelia and Miss Bowers.
