Chapter 104: Maximilian
Maximilian carries Noirtier to Valentine’s room.  In his grief, Maximilian collapses by the side of Valentine’s bed.  In private, Noirtier tells Villefort the name of the assassin.  Noirtier stays with Valentine’s body.  Villefort goes to his study.  Maximilian leaves the house.  Dr. d’Avrigny goes to get the examiner.  Abbe Busoni is called to Villefort’s house.
 
Chapter 105: Danglars’ Signature
The undertaker takes Valentine’s body away from Villefort’s house.  Villefort works on the accusation against Benedetto.  A crowd of mourners gather including Debray, Chateau-Renaud and Beauchamp.  The Count visits Danglars and asks for his five million.  Danglars is stunned but pays him with money intended for the hospital.  After the Count leaves, Danglars gathers his bank notes, burns documents, writes to his wife and takes his passport. 
 
Chapter 106: The Cemetery of Pere-La-Chaise
The funeral procession travels to the family vault of Saint-Meran and Villefort.  The Count joins the crowd looking for Maximilian.  The Count finds Maximilian praying then follows him back to Paris.  Maximilian goes home and locks himself in his room.  The Count breaks into the room and finds Maximilian at his writing desk with pistols by his side.  The Count reveals that he is Edmond Dantes, Morrel’s benefactor.  The Count invites Maximilian to come live with him.
 
Chapter 107: The Division
Madame Danglars visits Lucien Debray and shows him the letter left by her husband.  Danglars has left France to escape his creditors.  Madame Danglars says she is free but Debray shows no interest in her.  Debray gives Madame Danglars her share of the money they jointly invested.  Madame Danglars leaves.
Mercedes and Albert are staying in the room above Debray.  Albert tells Mercedes that she must go to Marseilles and get the money left by Edmond Dantes many years ago.  Albert has joined the French cavalry and is leaving for Africa.  As Mercedes and Albert depart, the Count watches and wonders how to restore their happiness.
 
Chapter 108: The Lion’s Den
Bertuccio visits Andrea (Benedetto) in prison.  Andrea expresses his gratefulness for all the ways the Count has helped him.  Andrea asks Bertuccio to tell him about his real father.  Bertuccio says he will come back tomorrow and reveal the identity of his father.
 
Chapter 109: The Judge
Villefort continues to work on the case against Andrea (Benedetto).  His father has been calm since Valentine’s death, but he glares at Madame Villefort when he sees her.  On the day of the trial, Villefort confronts his wife about the deaths of his mother in-law, father in-law, daughter and servant.  She confesses then pleads for her life.  He tells her to poison herself.
 
Chapter 110: The Assizes
Villefort watches as Andrea (Benedetto) enters the court.  The details of Benedetto’s birthplace (Auteuil), birthdate (September 27, 1817) and crimes are revealed.  Benedetto names Villefort as his father then tells the story of his birth.  Madame Danglars cries out and faints.  Villefort confirms the story and leaves.
 
Chapter 111:  Expiation
Villefort leaves the court in a daze.  He feels he must confess his crimes to Madame Villefort.  He goes home and finds his wife and son dead, she has poisoned them both.  Villefort goes to Noirtier’s room and finds Abbe Busoni.  The Abbe says that Villefort has repaid his debt and is forgiven.  The Abbe reveals himself as Edmond Dantes.  When Edmond hears that Villefort’s son has also died, he tries to save him but cannot.  Villefort goes mad.  The Count goes home to tell Maximilian they will leave Paris tomorrow.
 
Chapter 112: The Departure
Julie and Emmanuel say goodbye to Maximilian and the Count.  Julie asks the Count to restore peace and happiness to her brother.  The Count asks to stop the carriage for one last look at Paris, a great city. 
 
Chapter 113: The House in the Allees de Meillan
Maximilian and the Count travel to Marseilles.  The Count sends Maximilian to seek his father’s grave while he goes to Mercedes.  Mercedes is weeping in the garden at the house of Old Dantes.  She cries over the loss of her son.  The Count assures her that Albert will grow and prosper.  Mercedes knows that she was the only one who recognized and comprehended Edmond Dantes.  The comparison between him and other men has been her greatest torture.  She will spend her remaining days in prayer.  The Count leaves with a sad heart.  He goes to Maximilian and asks him to meet him on the Island of Monte Cristo on the fifth of October.
 
Chapter 114: Peppino
Danglars goes to the bank of Thomson & French in Rome to withdraw five million.  He spends the night at Casa Pastrini and sleeps late the next day.  He calls for a carriage and heads out of town.  During his journey, bandits overtake the carriage and demand he get out.  Danglars follows Peppino into the catacombs.  The captain of the bandits, Luigi Vampa, orders that Danglars be put in a cell.
 
Chapter 115: Luigi Vampa’s Bill of Fare
Danglars awakes unharmed.  He sees Peppino and asks for food.  Peppino will give him food but he must pay.  Danglars counts his money and pays for food. 
 
Chapter 116: The Pardon
Danglars asks for his ransom price.  Luigi Vampa says five million, all that Danglars has.  Vampa explains they are not allowed to kill him, so he must pay or suffer hunger.  Danglars doesn’t eat, tries to find a way to escape, then finally pays for food.  When his money runs low, he prays and doesn’t eat for four days.  He asks the guards to take his last gold in exchange for his life.  The Count asks Danglars if he repents.  Danglars says yes.  The Count says it was Danglars who helped to dishonor him and condemned Old Dantes to starve.  Edmond forgives Danglars.  He lets him keep his money, orders food and drink and grants his release.
 
Chapter 117:  The Fifth of October
Maximilian reaches the Island of Monte Cristo by yacht, the Count greets him on the shore.  Maximilian is still in despair over losing Valentine and has come to die in the arms of his friend.  They enter the grotto and sit at the dining room table.  The Count gives Maximilian a sleeping pill.  Valentine enters and expresses her gratefulness to the Count.  The Count asks Valentine to take care of Haydee when he leaves.  Haydee enters and professes her love for him.  Maximilian awakens and sees Valentine.  The next day, Jacopo delivers a letter to Maximilian from the Count.  The letter says Noirtier awaits to bless their wedding of his granddaughter and that Maximilian now owns the grotto, Paris house and Chateau.  The letter also reveals to Valentine that her father went mad and her brother died.  Haydee and the Count sail away.  Maximilian wonders if they will ever see them again, Valentine says they must wait and hope.
